All of that pissed off Bob Lutz, GM’s vice chair for product development at the time. A cigar-chomping veteran of the car industry with a penchant for irascible quotes—he once panned GM’s cars for looking like “angry kitchen appliances”—Lutz was especially attuned to the big narratives that drive public perception of the auto industry (while under the surface, most of the real action is driven by recondite stuff like regulation, industrial and trade policy, labor economics, and logistics). Lutz hated how the Prius had put a saintly halo on Toyota, which sold plenty of SUVs and pickups, while hapless GM was mocked for making the Hummer. He also took notice when Silicon Valley upstart Tesla made a major splash with its public debut, announcing it planned to make a lithium-ion-battery-powered luxury sports car. I love that “the Bolt” is the name, as it immediately brings to mind “quick.” The instant torque and excellent acceleration of electric vehicles is one of their two biggest selling points for the masses, imho. (The other is convenience.) General Motors' newest electric car will be a crossover based on the same platform as the Bolt EV. Backing it up is a 1.5-liter aluminum Ecotec engine for zero “range anxiety” because gas stations are plentiful and fast filling. When the juice runs out, the engine kicks on seamlessly and the car morphs to a 42 mpg hybrid. Very importantly, I actually think the new Volt looks really good. I wasn’t a fan of the first Volt, but the new Volt is a big step up in the looks category. I encourage you to watch the video at the top, as it captures the real-world look much better than static pictures. I just asked my wife what she thought of the new Volt, and she mentioned that it looked “sporty” — which was a key aim of GM.

“It's very hard to connect the dots because they are such different vehicles,” Balch acknowledged, referring to today’s SUVs and battery electrics. But that’s changing. The Bolt blurs the line between a tall hatchback and a crossover. We’re inclined to go with the former, while Chevrolet doggedly sticks with the latter. At any rate, it stretches 164 inches long, 69.5 inches wide, and 62.8 inches tall. It can carry 16.9 cubic feet of trunk space. The Volt is more of a conventional sedan with a sweeping roof line and a hatch added for practicality. Its measurements check in at 180.4 inches long, 71.2 inches wide, and 56.4 inches tall. It offers 10.6 cubic feet of trunk space, a dismal figure even subcompact hatchbacks like the Kia Rio manage to beat. Starting with the Bolt, the first thing to highlight is that it is a concept vehicle. Among major manufacturers, concept vehicles are often a lot different from the production versions GM responded to this trend by announcing that it plans to shift away from sedans (ending production of six sedans in total, including the Volt) and shifting resources to its larger-format vehicles. It’s a strategy that seems inconsistent, at least on the face of it.

Gesse said his team is challenged by "hitting the right markets," using "the best research" to narrow down its focus to a regional or even city and neighborhood level. "We won't spend much money" on the car in large, sprawling, farm-state regions, he suggested.Pressed on the planned use of net pricing, Gesse acknowledged "there will be an asterisk" next to that number—which, in reality, buyers only realize when they file their taxes for the year in which they purchase the vehicle. (Lessees see their payments reduced immediately, however.)That group includes not only the Volt and the upcoming Bolt EV, but also the 2016 Malibu Hybrid now going on sale that uses an adapted Volt powertrain in a mid-size sedan (without a plug). General Motors raised more than a few eyebrows when it unveiled the quirky-looking Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle concept last month at the Detroit Auto show. In a world where most affordable EVs.. I’ve been driving the Bolt around the Technical Center campus for about 15 minutes when Tavel brings up something that’s been bothering him. “You haven’t really stepped on it yet,” he says. I’ve been taking my time to get a feel for the car, treating it gently on wet roads in the presence of its chief creator. But knowing what I do about the fast pickup of electric cars—unlike combustion-powered vehicles, they deliver instant torque—I’m happy to oblige. I find a quiet corner of the campus and come to a stop with nothing but clear road ahead. I slam my right foot down and the nearly silent Bolt is suddenly a noise machine: The tires squeal on the wet pavement. After a half second, they catch and the Bolt zips ahead, if just a bit shakily. Chassis control is not quite perfect yet, Tavel says. That’ll be fixed before production starts—in just a few short months.

And he noted that part of the marketing is the idea that Chevy has "three great electrified products for three different use cases." On the other hand, Barra had a strong hand in a lot of the most transformative stuff going on at GM. Chief case in point: Not long before she became CEO, Barra had been tapped to run development of new products, the position once held by Lutz. It’s the company’s first series-produced electric car so straying too far from the mainstream could alienate buyers — Audi came to the same conclusion when it developed the E-Tron. The Bolt looks very much like a conventional car in both shape and design; nothing about it screams “I’m electric!” It’s more toned-down than the Leaf, one of its main rivals in the electric car segment. It falls in line with Chevrolet’s current design language inside and out.

How GM Beat Tesla to the First True Mass-Market Electric Car WIRE

At this point, there is no reason to believe otherwise, though the most conservative advice is waiting a year to let any bugs get worked out. And so Lutz, a guy who would later declare that global warming is a “total crock of shit,” began lobbying GM’s leadership to make the biggest, greenest play possible. He didn’t want GM to just build a me-too hybrid to compete with Toyota. He wanted GM to build a fully electric car that almost anyone could afford to buy and that wasn’t limited by range. He wanted, in effect, to build the Bolt. But the technology wasn’t there. The car that GM actually built at Lutz’s insistence—the Chevy Volt—went on to become one of the most talked-about American vehicles in decades, for a whole host of reasons, many of them symbolic. But in-house, says Tony Posawatz, the engineer who led the team that developed the Volt, it was very clear that this was going to be a transitional car—a warm-up for GM’s electric long game. When the Chevrolet Volt was launched at the end of 2010, I must confess that I gave it little chance of success. It seemed like an awkward compromise - buyers who wanted to go electric would surely..

By contrast, the 238-mile Bolt is all-electric, with enough miles for nearly anyone’s daily needs, and more than double that of the still-first-generation Nissan Leaf. This over-200 mile range is unprecedented at its sub-$40,000 price. It’s so remarkable, in fact, Motor Trend was compelled to compare the small Chevy to a large $72,000 as-equipped 60-kWh Tesla Model S as the next-nearest competitor range-wise until the Model 3 gets here next year. So, the Bolt on its 3.7-inch shorter wheelbase is 16.4-inches shorter overall, 1.7-inches narrower, and 6.4-inches taller. It also proves superior in internal space maximization: passenger volume: 94 cubic feet; cargo volume: 17 cubic feet. In contrast, the Volt’s passenger volume is 90 cubic feet and cargo space is 11 cubic feet. Will Volt owners be used as ambassadors for the car, as Chevy global marketing officer Tim Mahoney suggested almost two years ago?

If you’ve noticed certain names missing from the list of contenders for the race to 200 miles—chiefly Toyota—that’s mainly because Japanese and German automakers have focused on hydrogen fuel cell cars, an embryonic, expensive, and zero-carbon-emission technology that has its own problems, like a lack of national fueling infrastructure. Other automakers have responded to the rising tide of mandates with vehicles developed solely to meet requirements and avoid fines (shades of the EV1). The resulting cars are less than compelling and a pain for automakers. In May 2014, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne actually asked people not to buy the all-electric version of the Fiat 500, saying, “Every time I sell one, it costs me $14,000.” But the math of electric vehicles may begin to change with a mass-market EV like the Bolt, whose sales numbers could be in a different league. Barra wouldn’t disclose a sales goal—Chevy got pretty burned after missing its announced target for the Volt. Kelley Blue Book senior analyst Karl Brauer says that anything more than 50,000 units a year would be a huge coup. A number like that would make the Bolt the best-selling pure electric ever, ahead of Tesla and leagues ahead of Nissan’s Leaf and BMW’s new and funky i3. British singer Morrissey has asked GM to start offering vegan leather upholstery in its eco-friendly Chevrolet Volt and Bolt models, as part of a new PETA campaign. In a letter directed to GM CEO.. That trend is apparent across the EV market. In California, the nation’s largest EV market by far, pure electric-vehicle sales surpassed plug-in hybrids in 2015 and have since expanded their share of the market.

At last week's New York Auto Show, we sat down for a brief chat with Darin Gesse, who's responsible for marketing both the Volt plug-in hybrid and the Bolt EV electric car. When General Motors launched the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid in 2010, it was heralded as a breakthrough "car of the future." Turns out it came with an expiry date.  Come March, GM will no longer produce the Volt, as part of the automaker's restructuring plan announced last month. GM said it will focus on growing its truck and SUV business, while prioritizing future investments in next-generation of battery-electric vehicle architectures. "We know they may not trust dealers," he said, "and get [the bulk of] their product information elsewhere."

We asked how and where Chevy plans to explain, introduce, market, and promote both cars as it expands its plug-in vehicle lineup. At GM's annual conference the company said the all-electric Bolt arrives in 2016, the cell costs inside were $145/kwh and the Volt margins have increased 2015 GM Volt EVSE charging unit. cnczeus 4.163 views4 year ago. 58:43. As 2014 bled into 2015, Chevy engineers built about 100 Bolt prototypes, shipping them around the US for real-world testing to verify the findings of the battery lab. The cars went to Arizona and Florida. The team drove them up the California coast and negotiated San Francisco traffic. They ran the prototypes over rough roads, looking for ways to reduce noise and vibration (extra-tricky in a car with no engine to mask odd sounds). They chose specially developed Michelin tires to minimize rolling resistance and improve range. Working fast, they made thousands of changes to the car, constantly looking for ways to improve. The tests run 24 hours a day and in silence, generating terabytes of data.

Why General Motors Is Ditching the Chevy Volt Greentech Medi

ELECTRIC VEHICLES have been available to American consumers for the better part of two decades. The first EVs looked like science projects only a Sierra Club member could love, while today an all-electric luxury sedan—the Tesla Model S—is routinely described as the coolest car on the planet. Early electric cars had a maximum range of 50 miles; today’s highest-rated EV—again, the Model S—can go as many as 300 miles before it needs to plug in. And yet, for all that progress, fully electric vehicles still make up less than 1 percent of US auto sales. There’s a straightforward reason for this: The only one that goes far enough costs far too much. Searches web pages, images, PDF, MS Office and other file types in all the major languages, and includes advanced search features, news, maps and other services But yes, the G2 Volt/Bolt board is capable of going up to at least 250v since 248v doesn't hurt it. 1. In the earliest days of the auto industry, electric cars were about as popular as their combustion-powered counterparts. Just like today, they were cleaner and quieter but more limited in range than the competition. Plus, they didn’t require a hand crank to start—an annoying feature of early combustion vehicles that occasionally resulted in broken fingers. But in 1912, Cadillac, GM’s luxury arm, came out with the first electric starter for gas-powered vehicles. Electric cars died out shortly thereafter, and in a cloud of exhaust GM surged to become the world’s largest carmaker.
  2. GM CEO Mary Barra has stated repeatedly that her company is committed to an “all-electric future.” In a speech earlier this year, Barra said that commitment “is unwavering, regardless of any modifications to future fuel economy standards,” referring to an ongoing policy battle over vehicle emissions rules in the U.S.
  3. Now out of production, the Volt is a plug-in hybrid car equipped with a four-cylinder engine that takes over when the battery runs out of electricity. There’s a special space shaped to hold an iPhone 6, with a charge port right there, and a console compartment that fits a tablet. The rearview mirror can pipe in a display from cameras on the back of the car. The car also associates personal settings with different keys, so it knows whether you or your spouse is driving and tunes the radio appropriately. The backseat is remarkably roomy for a compact car, especially when it comes to headroom. I’m taller than average, and there are 3 or 4 inches between my head and the roof.
  5. For GM, the Bolt stands to offer a head start in a new kind of market for electric cars. For the Volt, GM settled on a design that was neither a Prius-style hybrid nor a pure electric car but something in..

In short, all these problems were new to a company whose experience lay in what Lutz calls “the oily bits.” So the team set about developing the expertise it lacked. GM established a curriculum with the University of Michigan to train battery engineers. It filled a vacant building in Brownstown, Michigan, with the equipment to make battery packs. The engineers created test procedures and wrote them down as they went. They modeled different use cases for the Volt, from a woman in northern Minnesota who plugs in every night to a guy in Miami who drives 100 miles a day. They built the battery lab and brought in the blue environmental chambers, then used them to see how the battery would stand up to each situation. “We invented the idea of what the lab should be,” Fletcher says. According to the National Severe Storm Laboratory, a single lightning bolt can have 100 million to 1 billion volts, and it contains billions of watts, depending on whether it is positive lightning or negative.. Regenerative braking captures the kinetic energy generated during braking and channels it back to the battery pack, though it’s not enough to power the car on its own. Charging the Volt’s battery pack takes a whopping 13 hours when using a 120-volt outlet or 2.3 hours when plugged into a 240-volt power source. Achieving a 2.3-hour charge requires the quick charger that’s standard on the Premier model and offered at an extra cost on the LT trim. Chevrolet cautiously points out the actual charge time may vary depending on factors like the weather. The Chevy Volt battery cover is made of thermoset, a type of plastic that's difficult to recycle. And once the batteries are ready for use, the thermoset cases that shipped them become useless So, what does all of this really mean? It means the time when electric cars will very clearly pass up gasmobiles as the best car options on the market (by a landslide, if you look at all of the benefits of electric cars) is likely to be in 2017 or so. (That’s actually what our readers have been saying for the past couple of years.)

New marketing tactics from GM on Chevy Volt, Bolt - CSMonitor

“The overall trend right now of consumers is they're moving from sedans and cars into crossovers and trucks. That is the trend from a business perspective that is driving all of these forward-looking moves that we're making right now,” said Balch. “The money that we will be able to save because of these transitions is going to be invested in autonomous and electric-vehicle propulsion. So, it's like we're using the core business right now to fund the future technology for vehicles of the future.” Recent trends show, as many expected, that as battery range increases and charging times decline, consumers will become more comfortable with all-electric drive. As more pure EVs come to market, it’s likely to accelerate the shift away from plug-in hybrids, and could, eventually, eliminate the need for gasoline entirely.

(Offsetting the Steve Jobs vibe just a bit is a calendar on the wall that shows a fluffy white cat in the backseat of an Opel Corsa.) As Barra tells it, the process to develop the Bolt really took off when GM’s team was regrouping after a major setback. In 2012, GM invested in a California startup called Envia, which had developed a new battery that posted incredible performance numbers. Envia promised to deliver a 200-mile battery by fall 2013. But its technology turned out to be a flop.
  4. Even if sales revenue from the Bolt doesn’t equal what GM has spent developing the car—which is likely, because battery power is still expensive—the Bolt will bring other benefits to GM. The car’s fuel economy rating will be so good that even just decent sales would significantly boost GM’s average fleet-fuel-economy numbers, ironically allowing the automaker to sell more pickups and SUVs, where the real profit margins are.

  6. And so the design team set to work devising a car that would appeal to consumers well beyond the ecowarrior, early-adopter demographic. Some flashy ideas were thrown out early on: A carbon fiber body? Lightweight but too expensive at this price point. Suicide doors? Eye-catching, but they added mass without functional benefits. Capped wheels? Good for aerodynamics, but they signaled something science project–y. “It’s got to look like a serious car,” design lead Stuart Norris says. The team delivered as spacious an interior as possible, with upright glass to make the relatively small car feel more substantial and a raised driving position for a commanding view of the road.
  7. The 2019 Bolt carries a base price of $37,495 after Chevrolet adds a mandatory $875 destination charge. Think of it as shipping and handling for cars. The Volt’s technology isn’t as expensive, so pricing started at $34,395 with the same destination charge added in. Used examples are now available nationwide for under $30,000.

It's also encouraging dealers to use Volts as loaner cars. This $3,500 "variable profit improvement" is a bit of a stick in the eye for us; not because we don't want GM to make money on EVs (we really do), but because it comes after many years of promises to the consumer to take the cost out of the extended range EV, and then pass a certain amount of them on. Bolt-Volt? GM Says Bolt Name Could Change Foru

Chevy's Volt, Bolt are one-two jol

Are you OK with that? Can you work around it? If not, the 53-mile Volt could let you drive what is essentially a pure EV day to day that lets you keep going until you find time and place to recharge. This takes overnight on 120-volt house current, or around 4.5 hours at 240 volts. Before being overawed by that massive 11.6-second gap, understand those last 10 mph are the hardest for either car. So yes, industry leading and a fantastic/great price (which we are delighted to finally see in print), but also available to purchase industry wide.  Not great from a competitive standpoint for GM, but a pretty great revelation for the plug-in segment overall - as well as a solid price-point on cell costs heading into 2016.Both promise to be well engineered, and despite the Volt’s being downgraded recently by Consumer Reports, it has previously topped its list for owner satisfaction, and anecdotes attest that the Volt has been a relatively reliable car.

Nearly everything changes when you opt for a fundamentally different power train, so GM’s greatest advantage—more than a century of experience building cars—was all but moot. Car structure was different, since they were building around a battery, not an engine. The brakes, steering, and air conditioner were powered differently. New systems, from electromagnetics for the motors to onboard and off-board charging, each came with its own learning curve. The engineers didn’t have established tests to follow. Just turning on the car required finding the perfect sequence of electrical signals from more than a dozen modules. “Oh my God, it took us forever to get the first Volt to start,” Fletcher says. CHEVROLET SAYS it is on track to start delivering the Bolt by year’s end. If that happens, it’s quite possible the company will have the winner’s circle to itself for some time. It now appears that the next Nissan Leaf will have 110 miles of range—a modest improvement over the current model. Volkswagen is at least two years away from its target. (It’s also tied up with a potentially ruinous scandal after cheating on emissions tests for millions of its diesel vehicles.) And Tesla has a track record of running about two years behind its production targets. But all the automakers will need to start building attractive zero-emissions vehicles somehow, and soon. It’s important to understand that the market for electric cars is still driven less by corporate profit-seeking than by government arm-twisting. In the US, federal fuel standards require automakers to achieve a fleet average of roughly 34 miles per gallon in 2016 and 49 mpg by 2025. On top of that, 10 states won’t let automakers operate unless they sell at least some zero-emission vehicles. All the automakers have to figure out how to get there. This GM presentation slide (above) basically says that GM was indeed successful in getting the costs down, and was/is be able to follow through on both of those promises...but ultimately decided to keep the money for themselves in the end. In more familiar terms, the hatchback produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Its 3,580-pound weight makes it rather portly for a compact car, though it’s on the lighter side of the spectrum for an electric car. Chevrolet quotes a range of up to 238 miles, but your mileage will vary depending on how you drive, where you live, and what you routinely carry.

The Volt is one of the most important vehicles to come off General Motors assembly line. Chevy Volt - GM Pride. Courtesy Chevrolet. 9 years ago|12 views Then there was the battery. Lithium-ion chemistry was a new thing 10 years ago, and the Volt team quickly discovered how much of a pain in the neck it is. “Batteries wear out just sitting there, and they wear out when you cycle them,” says Bill Wallace, GM’s head battery engineer. “And then they wear out if you over-discharge them, or if you overcharge them.” They’re extremely sensitive to temperature. They change shape as they charge and discharge. They can also catch fire. The Volt’s time to reach 100 mph is 24.8 seconds, and the Bolt – which cannot go that fast – saw 90 mph in just 13.2 seconds. Для Nissan Leaf є програма Leaf Spy, для Chevrolet Volt є аналогічна MyGreenVolt. Якщо вірити файлу, який я виклав в темі про батарею Volt, нова батарея може мати реальну ємність навіть.. The extended-range Volt is technically classified as a plug-in hybrid, and its 53-mile e-range means it offers more all-important electric mobility per charge than any other full-range plug-in hybrid sold.

Both are compact in size, though the Volt is the largest a “compact” can be by U.S. EPA reckoning, and the Bolt, a “small wagon,” would be called mid-sized by interior volume if classified as a regular car. GM has also never had to replace a Volt’s battery due to it wearing out before its 100,000 mile warranty was up, and it says it has applied powertrain lessons learned to the Bolt. When I meet with Barra after my test-drive, we start by talking about the big-picture stuff: how the car could fundamentally change public attitudes toward electric vehicles. But she quickly moves on to the little things: the roominess, the connectivity, how the trunk opening is shaped so you can slide in that bookshelf you bought at Ikea. “No one’s gonna buy 200 miles if it doesn’t come with a great vehicle,” Barra says.Sidenote: LG Chem would also like to sell everyone complete battery packs - up to 120 kWh if they could.

GM gets praise for a well engineered battery thermal management system used on Chevy Volt, Chevy Bolt, Chevy Spark EV and the Cadillac ELR. Few days ago the news broke out that Nissan Leaf.. Both these Bowtie brand cars are relatively premium as Chevrolets go. Outwardly, the Volt’s design is very similar to the Cruze, and the Bolt is not dissimilar to a tall Sonic. Inside, both get gee-whiz dash displays, and accoutrements. The Bolt’s 10.2-inch touchscreen does outdo the Volt’s 8-inch screen. As GM starts to sell its 2017 Volt nationally, and prepares for the debut of its 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV at the end of the year, marketing will be absolutely key. State-level incentives and rebates may be the same for each, or lower for plug-in hybrids, as is the case in California.THE FIRST TIME I lay eyes on the Bolt, it’s wrapped in swirling black-and-white camouflage—the effect known as dazzle—designed to hide its curves and lines from cameras. That’s about as flashy as things get. There are no gull-wing doors or retracting handles like on some Teslas. The Bolt sits on modest 17-inch wheels. It appears to be a nice, of-the-moment-looking hatchback, like a Prius C or a Honda Fit with a shorter hood and taller roof. The main thing that indicates its revolutionary potential is the dashboard, which tells me I have 192 miles of range, a number I’ve only seen in Teslas. GM’s core business — its gas-powered trucks, crossovers and SUVs — dominated the automaker’s display at the L.A. Auto Show this year, with the Bolt EV tucked in the very back.

General Motors first unveiled the Chevy Bolt as a concept car in January 2015, billing it as a vehicle that would offer 200 miles of range for just $30,000 (after a $7,500 federal tax credit). Barring any unforeseen delays, the first Bolts will roll off the production line at GM’s Orion Assembly facility in Michigan by the end of 2016. As Pam Fletcher, GM’s executive chief engineer for electric vehicles, recently put it to me with a confident grin: “Who wants to be second?”Which ever way you go, a test drive is always desirable, though many at this stage will buy these cars based on their research and gut feeling. I think the Volt is going to do very well with the upgrades. With a significantly lower price and the many advantages of being a pure-electric vehicle, I think the Nissan LEAF will still do very well. However, I could see the Volt becoming the top-selling EV in the US again. I think the biggest EV questions for 2015 are now: Will Nissan roll out an updated and massively improved LEAF? Will GM bring the new Volt or a sister vehicle to Europe (and other markets)? Will the Model X arrive? This is already shaping up to be a huge year for electric vehicles, especially if you throw in the other models hitting the market this year, but if Nissan unveils a hugely improved LEAF, this will really turn into a blockbuster year. If you take that recommendation, then the Volt is the only choice, but many won’t want to wait for the first sub-$40,000 EV with over 200 miles range.

The Volt’s rear seating is thus also compromised. Theoretically, it’s a five-passenger car, but the middle rear “seating position” is not as generous, and neither is rear legroom. But the Bolt can still run out of juice in a world where car charging is less plentiful and its “50 kW” charge rate is slower than a Tesla’s. Slide: 11 / of 19. It has a top speed of 30 mph and can travel 40 miles on a single charge—in warm weather.CORBIS A primary selling point for the Volt was that owners could go (mostly) electric without having to compromise on range. The Volt’s roughly 50-mile electric range covers most daily commutes in America. For longer journeys, the car seamlessly switches over to using its small gasoline engine to power an on-board generator, for a total hybrid range of more than 400 miles.  Slide: 5 / of 19.
