ELECTRIC VEHICLES have been available to American consumers for the better part of two decades. The first EVs looked like science projects only a Sierra Club member could love, while today an all-electric luxury sedan—the Tesla Model S—is routinely described as the coolest car on the planet. Early electric cars had a maximum range of 50 miles; today’s highest-rated EV—again, the Model S—can go as many as 300 miles before it needs to plug in. And yet, for all that progress, fully electric vehicles still make up less than 1 percent of US auto sales. There’s a straightforward reason for this: The only one that goes far enough costs far too much. In short, all these problems were new to a company whose experience lay in what Lutz calls “the oily bits.” So the team set about developing the expertise it lacked. GM established a curriculum with the University of Michigan to train battery engineers. It filled a vacant building in Brownstown, Michigan, with the equipment to make battery packs. The engineers created test procedures and wrote them down as they went. They modeled different use cases for the Volt, from a woman in northern Minnesota who plugs in every night to a guy in Miami who drives 100 miles a day. They built the battery lab and brought in the blue environmental chambers, then used them to see how the battery would stand up to each situation. “We invented the idea of what the lab should be,” Fletcher says. According to the National Severe Storm Laboratory, a single lightning bolt can have 100 million to 1 billion volts, and it contains billions of watts, depending on whether it is positive lightning or negative.. Regenerative braking captures the kinetic energy generated during braking and channels it back to the battery pack, though it’s not enough to power the car on its own. Charging the Volt’s battery pack takes a whopping 13 hours when using a 120-volt outlet or 2.3 hours when plugged into a 240-volt power source. Achieving a 2.3-hour charge requires the quick charger that’s standard on the Premier model and offered at an extra cost on the LT trim. Chevrolet cautiously points out the actual charge time may vary depending on factors like the weather. The Chevy Volt battery cover is made of thermoset, a type of plastic that's difficult to recycle. And once the batteries are ready for use, the thermoset cases that shipped them become useless So, what does all of this really mean? It means the time when electric cars will very clearly pass up gasmobiles as the best car options on the market (by a landslide, if you look at all of the benefits of electric cars) is likely to be in 2017 or so. (That’s actually what our readers have been saying for the past couple of years.)
“The overall trend right now of consumers is they're moving from sedans and cars into crossovers and trucks. That is the trend from a business perspective that is driving all of these forward-looking moves that we're making right now,” said Balch. “The money that we will be able to save because of these transitions is going to be invested in autonomous and electric-vehicle propulsion. So, it's like we're using the core business right now to fund the future technology for vehicles of the future.” Recent trends show, as many expected, that as battery range increases and charging times decline, consumers will become more comfortable with all-electric drive. CHEVROLET SAYS it is on track to start delivering the Bolt by year’s end. If that happens, it’s quite possible the company will have the winner’s circle to itself for some time. It now appears that the next Nissan Leaf will have 110 miles of range—a modest improvement over the current model. Volkswagen is at least two years away from its target. (It’s also tied up with a potentially ruinous scandal after cheating on emissions tests for millions of its diesel vehicles.) And Tesla has a track record of running about two years behind its production targets. But all the automakers will need to start building attractive zero-emissions vehicles somehow, and soon. It’s important to understand that the market for electric cars is still driven less by corporate profit-seeking than by government arm-twisting. In the US, federal fuel standards require automakers to achieve a fleet average of roughly 34 miles per gallon in 2016 and 49 mpg by 2025. On top of that, 10 states won’t let automakers operate unless they sell at least some zero-emission vehicles. All the automakers have to figure out how to get there. In more familiar terms, the hatchback produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Its 3,580-pound weight makes it rather portly for a compact car, though it’s on the lighter side of the spectrum for an electric car. Chevrolet quotes a range of up to 238 miles, but your mileage will vary depending on how you drive, where you live, and what you routinely carry.

The extended-range Volt is technically classified as a plug-in hybrid, and its 53-mile e-range means it offers more all-important electric mobility per charge than any other full-range plug-in hybrid sold.
Both are compact in size, though the Volt is the largest a “compact” can be by U.S. EPA reckoning, and the Bolt, a “small wagon,” would be called mid-sized by interior volume if classified as a regular car. GM has also never had to replace a Volt’s battery due to it wearing out before its 100,000 mile warranty was up, and it says it has applied powertrain lessons learned to the Bolt. When I meet with Barra after my test-drive, we start by talking about the big-picture stuff: how the car could fundamentally change public attitudes toward electric vehicles. GM gets praise for a well engineered battery thermal management system used on Chevy Volt, Chevy Bolt, Chevy Spark EV and the Cadillac ELR. Few days ago the news broke out that Nissan Leaf.. GM designed the Bolt as a commercial-capable vehicle, positioned for its Lyft operation, while the The Volt's lower stance does cut the air far better with a 0.285 coefficient of drag, versus the Bolt's.. Both these Bowtie brand cars are relatively premium as Chevrolets go. Outwardly, the Volt’s design is very similar to the Cruze, and the Bolt is not dissimilar to a tall Sonic. Inside, both get gee-whiz dash displays, and accoutrements. The Bolt’s 10.2-inch touchscreen does outdo the Volt’s 8-inch screen. As GM starts to sell its 2017 Volt nationally, and prepares for the debut of its 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV at the end of the year, marketing will be absolutely key. That’s about as flashy as things get. There are no gull-wing doors or retracting handles like on some Teslas. The Bolt sits on modest 17-inch wheels. It appears to be a nice, of-the-moment-looking hatchback, like a Prius C or a Honda Fit with a shorter hood and taller roof. The main thing that indicates its revolutionary potential is the dashboard, which tells me I have 192 miles of range, a number I’ve only seen in Teslas. GM’s core business — its gas-powered trucks, crossovers and SUVs — dominated the automaker’s display at the L.A. Auto Show this year, with the Bolt EV tucked in the very back.

General Motors first unveiled the Chevy Bolt as a concept car in January 2015, billing it as a vehicle that would offer 200 miles of range for just $30,000 (after a $7,500 federal tax credit). Barring any unforeseen delays, the first Bolts will roll off the production line at GM’s Orion Assembly facility in Michigan by the end of 2016. As Pam Fletcher, GM’s executive chief engineer for electric vehicles, recently put it to me with a confident grin: “Who wants to be second?”Which ever way you go, a test drive is always desirable, though many at this stage will buy these cars based on their research and gut feeling. I think the Volt is going to do very well with the upgrades. With a significantly lower price and the many advantages of being a pure-electric vehicle, I think the Nissan LEAF will still do very well. However, I could see the Volt becoming the top-selling EV in the US again. I think the biggest EV questions for 2015 are now: Will Nissan roll out an updated and massively improved LEAF? Will GM bring the new Volt or a sister vehicle to Europe (and other markets)? Will the Model X arrive? This is already shaping up to be a huge year for electric vehicles, especially if you throw in the other models hitting the market this year, but if Nissan unveils a hugely improved LEAF, this will really turn into a blockbuster year. If you take that recommendation, then the Volt is the only choice, but many won’t want to wait for the first sub-$40,000 EV with over 200 miles range.
The Volt’s rear seating is thus also compromised. Theoretically, it’s a five-passenger car, but the middle rear “seating position” is not as generous, and neither is rear legroom. But the Bolt can still run out of juice in a world where car charging is less plentiful and its “50 kW” charge rate is slower than a Tesla’s. Slide: 11 / of 19.
